Updated: Feb 2, 2023

"All about the apartment in single click." - SwissPlatz

You are almost there ! The entrance inventory check is the last step before taking the key of the apartment in your hands. This post will give you essential points to check during the inventory check.

Do you need additional information? Go to our official website.

The inventory check. Is it that important?

Yes, this is important to avoid any surprising compensation when you leave the apartment. To give an example, a cracked sink can easily cost you more than CHF 600 to replace.

That is why we would like to provide you with a checklist that will facilitate the inventory check.

  1. Contact SIG

  2. Check the condition of

    1. wooden floor

    2. tiles

    3. household appliances

    4. sanitary installations

    5. bathroom in general

It is absolutely essential that you note all defects on the report of the inventory of fixtures. We remind you that the management or the owner does not take into account anything that is not written.

#1 Contact SIG

The SIG, the Service Industriel de Genève, is the largest supplier of electricity in Geneva. It is important to inform them of your move in order to avoid having your electricity cut off on your first day in the apartment.

For this, you have two possibilities: telephone or internet

  • Phone : Call 0844 800 808 to announce your move in. The electricity will be available immediately. However, the announcement by phone will cost you CHF 50.

  • Internet : Announce your move via the SIG website. Click here to go directly to the page then simply follow the instructions. Announcement by internet will cost you CHF 30 but it must be done at least 3 days before the date of moving in.

#2 Check the condition of the different elements

As we mentioned before, it is absolutely important that you note all the defects on the report of the inventory check, and this, to avoid any unexpected compensation when you leave the apartment.

  • Wooden floor : All large scratches should be noted. Photos are very helpful to avoid confusion. Don't worry if the management decides to put "usure normale (normal wear)" on the report.

  • Tile : Identify all cracks. Photos are also very helpful.

  • Appliances : Check the functioning of the visible ones such as the door, the handle, the vitroceramic plate etc.

  • Sanitary installations : Check the flow of hot and cold water. Take a good look at the underside of the metal trap because it may be about to break due to corrosion.

  • Bathroom : Check carefully for cracks in the sink or toilet bowl. You need to look closely because the cracks are often very fine. It is also useful to check that the toilet flush is working properly.

This checklist is certainly not exhaustive. Any comments on this topic are welcome to complete the list !
