Parking in Geneva

Updated: Feb 2, 2023

Geneva is a small city with a high density of cars. Parking spaces are becoming increasingly scarce and Geneva's policy of prioritizing public transportation also plays a large role. However, the car has become an almost mandatory asset for the family with children or for those who travel a lot. In this post, we will present different ways to find a parking space in Geneva.

3 main types of parking

Private partking

This is the best way. A parking space in your building's parking lot would be ideal for your car. It is worthwhile to ask the management if they offer one. The monthly rent is around CHF 200. It is not the cheapest but it is the most practical way. If it is covered, your car insurance will even give you the discount, as it is considered a safer place.

Macaron : Parking for residents

This is the most economical way. It costs only CHF 200 per year. The outdoor parking spaces are divided by zone and the badge will allow you to park in the assigned zone. Below is the sign that specifies the zone.

The application can be filed with the "fondation de parking" (French only) with the following documents :

If you have a foreign number plate, there is no problem. You have 1 year to change your foreign plate into a Swiss plate. Then, you must update your badge afterwards.

Parking pass

No private parking space, no macaron? The last resort would be a season ticket, with parking spaces in the city centre. The price is obviously very high and, above all, with such a shortage of parking spaces, there is often a waiting list to obtain one. For example, there is a minimum 2-year wait at the Rive car park. Try this method when you really can't find a parking space anywhere else.
